Sustainable Partnerships for the Ocean Ocean Science Decade for Sustainable Development

The Portuguese Marine Litter Association (APLM), in collaboration with the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), the Network for Environmental Studies in Portuguese (REALP), the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE), and NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT UNL), invites participation in the Ocean Science Decade for Sustainable Development Lab.

In 2021, APLM developed the “Clean Ocean” initiative with the goal of building sustainable partnerships for the ocean with organisations from Portuguese-speaking countries, using a shared identity approach with these countries.

This event, part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, took place online on November 18, 2021. APLM called for this day to be marked as Coastal Cleanup Day in Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

In 2022, APLM hosted a roundtable to mark November 18, encouraging partner organisations to carry out beach cleanups, coastal, river, or forest cleanups in their countries and to share the results through the LixoMarinho.app, a simple and intuitive app for tracking marine litter.

This year, 2023, APLM invites all partners to celebrate November 18, carrying out beach, coastal, river, or forest cleanups*. This will be the first year we celebrate this day together with joint cleanup actions. We are sharing some materials, including logos, that you can use for publicising the activity and that may be helpful in the organisation of these events.

All results shared via email with APLM will be used to produce a concrete snapshot of the situation regarding different waste types and marine litter in our countries.

In Our First Decade of Activity
We are proud to have the support of organisations and citizens from all Portuguese-speaking countries, a remarkable achievement thanks to the voluntary work of many people.

Thank you for joining us,
For a Litter-Free Ocean!

NOTE: If it’s not possible to organise a cleanup on the exact day, we suggest carrying it out within 15 days before or after this date, based on the availability of each partner. We again encourage the use of the LixoMarinho.app for simple registration of the litter collected, or alternatively, the manual completion of a form with the types and quantities of materials found, preferably in number and weight.

KEY SUMMARY
Coastal Cleanup Day in
Portuguese-Speaking Countries
November 18

  • November 18 is the proposed day for cleanup actions, following data collection methodologies that allow us to estimate the amounts and types of waste and marine litter deposited on beaches, coastal areas, rivers, or forests.

  • On this day, voluntary actions will be carried out by our partners in Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste..
  • We want this day to be celebrated by everyone, and for the actions carried out to gain both national and international visibility, bringing together more people and organisations towards a shared goal of a Litter-Free Ocean in our countries.

  • At a time when the United Nations are in dialogue to build a legally binding global treaty for plastics, it’s important that we all unite, following APLM’s motto.

TOGETHER FOR A LITTER-FREE OCEAN
