Kids Dive

APLM is a partner in the KIDS DIVE project, which aims to raise awareness of the urgent need to protect the marine environment and biodiversity. The project promotes sustainability and contributes to building a more participative blue generation, introducing children and young people to the underwater world through an educational programme based on two principles: “learning by doing” and “knowing to preserve”.

The Cotton Swab Plague

This project was launched by APLM at the National Citizen Science Meeting on October 24, 2017, at the Teatro Thalia in Lisbon.
The project aims to quantify the cotton swabs accumulating on the beaches of Portugal, whether brought by the sea, rivers, or resulting from discharges from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) during heavy rainfall or due to malfunctioning systems.

POIZON

The POIZON project was conceived in 2008 and developed between 2010 and 2013. It was a pioneering project in Portugal focused on researching microplastics in the oceans, in alignment with research being initiated in other institutions, particularly in Europe. (PTDC/MAR/102677/2008)

MARLISCO

The European project MARLISCO (Marine Litter in European Seas: Social Awareness and Co-Responsibility) was developed between 2012 and 2016 with the goal of raising social awareness regarding marine litter problems and possible solutions.

BASEMAN

A European scientific research project (2015-2019) that tested various methodologies for sampling, purifying, and identifying microplastics in different matrices. It contributed to the development of harmonised protocols for analysing particles smaller than 5 mm. APLM collaborated on some tasks in partnership with MARE-NOVA.

RIVERSEA

The RIVERSEA project (2018-2022) studies how microplastics are transported from rivers to estuaries and the ocean. APLM collaborates with MARE-NOVA on tasks related to microplastic identification.

CurtMAR

An educational project on ocean literacy developed by the Portuguese Association for Environmental Education (ASPEA), in partnership with Escola Profissional do Alto Minho Interior (EPRAMI), APLM, and the Norwegian school Dettverrfaglig ekunstinstitutt (DTK), funded by EEA Grants, and promoted by the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy – DGPM.
