PORTUGUESE MARINE LITTER ASSOCIATION
APLM emerged from the academic environment in 2013, following ongoing research projects developed at NOVA – School of Science and Technology. The starting point was the European project MARLISCO, where we developed a mutual learning scope that brings scientific knowledge to society. This project shaped the integrative vision that underpins our line of action.
Our goal is to work with various sectors of society, encouraging collaboration while searching for solutions, as we believe this is the way to try to address a problem that belongs to everyone.
SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE OCEAN
As part of the CLEAN OCEAN initiative, APLM invites partners from all Portuguese-speaking countries to join in celebrating November 18 th by organising either a beach, coastal, riverine or forest clean up. Let’s build a marine litter and waste baseline database in our countries!

We offer four games co-created with students from various educational levels as part of the EDUMAR project.

TALKS AND CONFERENCES
2 nd Portuguese Marine Litter & Microplastics Conference, September 2019, Setúbal.
The 2nd Portuguese Conference on Marine Litter (2CPLM) took place between September
19 to 21, 2019, at Casa da Baía in Setúbal. Focusing mainly on positive solutions for plastics
and the reduction of marine litter, the event brought together diverse stakeholders in panel
discussions on policy and awareness, economy and society, and research and the development of innovative solutions. The programme also featured a scientific workshop on the distribution and effects of microplastics, as well as a celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day.
7th International Marine Debris Conference, November 2022, South Korea
APLM presented two projects at this global conference, that focussed on reducing single-use
plastics (LowPlast – The Art of Reducing Plastic) and promoting ocean literacy through collaborative games (EduMar – Knowing to Care).
6th International Congress on Environmental Education of the Portuguese-Speaking Countries and Communities, November 2021, Cape Verde
Launch of the Clean Ocean event – promoting sustainable partnerships for the Ocean,
aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
